Pregnancy Appointments vs. Birth Prep Appointments: What's the Difference?
If you're pregnant and looking into osteopathy at Yarra Valley Women's Health, you might notice we offer two different types of appointments. Pregnancy appointments and Birth Prep appointments. They're both designed to support you through pregnancy and birth, but they serve quite different purposes. Here's a simple breakdown.
Pregnancy Appointments
These appointments are about treatment and management during pregnancy. As your body changes to accommodate your growing baby, aches, pains, and pelvic floor concerns are common and often very treatable.
Sessions can include external osteopathic musculoskeletal treatment for pregnancy related concerns like back pain, hip pain, and rib discomfort, as well as general pregnancy support and care. Where appropriate, internal assessment and treatment may also be offered, though it's not required. The goal is always simply to help you feel more comfortable and supported, whatever that looks like for you.
In short: if you're dealing with a specific ache, pain, or pelvic floor concern right now, a pregnancy appointment is the one to book.
Birth Prep Appointments
These appointments take a different approach, they're hands on as well as education based, designed to help you (and your partner, if you'd like them involved) get your body ready for birth, rather than focusing on general aches and pains.
Each session is individualised, we assess and build your plan for birth preparation based on how you're presenting, both internally and externally. This can include:
Internal pelvic floor assessment, to map out any restrictions or areas we may need to work on
Reassessing contractions, relaxation, and bearing down
Perineal massage education
Education on tools for managing pain in labour
Exercises and techniques to help baby engage into the pelvis and support you during labour
Education on active birth positions
Education on the immediate postpartum period and how to maximise healing and recovery
It's not just about learning techniques, it's about identifying and working through anything that might be holding you back physically or mentally as birth approaches, so your body is genuinely ready.
We recommend starting birth prep appointments from 30 weeks. The number of sessions is different for everyone, some people feel ready after just one or two, while others like a little more time and support along the way. We'll help you work out what feels right for you.
Which One Do I Need?
Think of it this way:
Pregnancy appointments = ongoing care and treatment for how your body feels right now
Birth prep appointments = preparation and education for what's ahead
Many people find value in both, using pregnancy appointments to stay comfortable throughout, and birth prep appointments to feel genuinely ready as their due date approaches.
If you're not sure which is right for you, our team is always happy to help you figure out the best starting point.
