Vaginal Pessary Fittings in Healesville
A vaginal pessary is a removable medical device that sits inside the vagina to provide support for pelvic organ prolapse. Pessaries come in a range of shapes and sizes, allowing us to find an option that best suits your anatomy, symptoms, lifestyle and type of prolapse.
When appropriately fitted, most people should not be able to feel their pessary during everyday activities. The aim is for you to be able to walk, exercise, work and go about your day comfortably while receiving additional support for your prolapse.
What is a Vaginal Pessary?
Pessaries Don't Have to Be Forever
Choosing a pessary doesn't necessarily mean committing to one permanently.
For some people, a pessary provides an effective long-term option for managing prolapse symptoms. For others, we may use one temporarily to provide additional support while working on pelvic floor rehabilitation, returning to exercise, recovering postpartum or during periods when symptoms are more noticeable.
Some people may also choose to use their pessary only for certain activities, such as running, higher-impact exercise or longer days on their feet.
Your pessary management should fit around your life and your goals, and this can change over time.
Finding the Right Pessary for You
There is no single pessary that works for everyone.
At Yarra Valley Women's Health, we fit a wide range of vaginal pessaries, with different shapes, sizes and levels of support available depending on your individual presentation.
Your appointment includes an assessment of your prolapse, symptoms and pelvic floor function before discussing which pessary options may be appropriate for you.
Finding the right fit can sometimes involve trialling different sizes or styles. A well-fitting pessary should feel comfortable and supportive without interfering with normal daily activities.
We'll also make sure you understand how to use and care for your pessary, including whether it can be removed and reinserted yourself, how often it should be reviewed and what to do if you experience any concerns.
Pessary Support Alongside Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation
A pessary is one tool we can use as part of prolapse management—it doesn't mean we stop working on everything else.
Depending on your individual presentation, we may combine pessary support with pelvic floor rehabilitation, education, bowel and bladder strategies, exercise modification and advice around managing pressure and load.
For some people, temporarily reducing the feeling of heaviness or pressure can also make it easier to stay active and participate in their rehabilitation.
Our goal is to help you understand your prolapse, feel confident in your options and find a management approach that works for your body and your lifestyle.
Could a Pessary Be Right for Me?
A pessary may be worth considering if prolapse symptoms such as vaginal heaviness, pressure or a feeling of bulging are affecting your comfort, exercise or everyday activities.
You don't need to wait until your prolapse becomes severe to discuss your options. Pessaries can be considered at different stages of prolapse and can form part of either short-term or longer-term management.
If you're unsure whether a pessary is appropriate for you, a Vaginal Pessary Assessment allows us to assess your prolapse, discuss your symptoms and goals, and talk through the management options available to you.
